Grand Prix

 GRAP   (Charlton, 1967-1970)

and 1969 Charlton Publications, Inc.

Porches, Lotuses, Ferraris and other formula cars are the real stars of this book that features the European-style of cross-country auto racing. Although the cars are the hook, for plot purposes the stories pivot on the drivers, who race for reasons ranging from familial duty to proving self worth to greed. Artists like Don Perlin who drew The Defenders and Jack Keller who filled in on Kid Colt Outlaw for Marvel contributed art to this book.

Like romance comics and military titles, comics for racing enthusiasts are another branch of the industry that has withered and died for lack of enthusiasm. This title from Charlton was one of a stable of four comics relating to auto sports. Hot Rods and Racing Cars, Worlds of Wheels and Drag N Wheels populated the comic racks along side Grand Prix in the late 1960s.
