Young Men

Formerly known as “Cowboy Romances,” Young Men was a perfect example of Marvel publisher Martin Goodman trying to catch hold of whatever type of comics was selling at a given moment. With issue #12, Young Men took on a war comics focus, and did a modest name change to “Young Men on the Battlefield.” Sports and hot-rod issues followed.

The real switch came with issue #24, when Young Men switched to a super-hero format starring the wartime sensation, the Human Torch. Although super-heroes were in a time of decline, issue #24 brought the core Marvel heroes back briefly, and retold the origins of Captain America, the Human Torch, and the Sub-Mariner. The effect was not to last, however, and Young Men disappeared with issue #28. It would not be until six years later that the age of super-heroes would arrive with the introduction of the Fantastic Four (Vol. 1) in 1961.
