Baseball Comics

 BAS4   (Kitchen Sink, 1991-1992)

™ and ©1950, 1992 Will Eisner

In 1948, Will Eisner tried to expand out from his successful newspaper section, The Spirit, to publish comic books for newsstand distribution. One of these efforts was Baseball Comics, featuring the exploits of the talented but none-too-bright phenom, Rube Rooky. Despite the excellent art by Eisner and his studio (Tex Blaisdell, Jerry Grandenetti and Jules Feiffer) and the storytelling power of Eisner at his late 40s peak, the market reacted with indifference to the concept and Baseball Comics was sent to the showers after the first issue. The 1991 reprint is a facsimile of the original issue, with superb reproduction, slick paper and an introductory essay by David Schreiner. As a bonus, there’s a tip-in set of baseball cards drawn by Eisner, featuring rookie players from the 1948 baseball season.
