Some people wish they could be artists. Others, like Arthur Suydam, seem like they couldn’t possibly have been meant for anything else. Suydam’s gorgeous pencil and ink drawings first made their way into the comic book world in the 1970s, presenting a widely respected merging of comic book adventure and classical painting. This collection focuses on the “Barbarian in Art,” and presents some of Suydam’s renditions of Robert E. Howard’s Conan, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan, and Death Dealer, originally created by Suydam’s mentor and friend Frank Frazetta.

The book features original sketches, both published and unpublished, some of which appeared as cover art for various comic publishers. Text includes character histories and a lengthy interview with Suydam.
