!Gag! (Harrier)

!Gag! was published by Britain’s Harrier Comics from 1988–1989. Running some seven issues in all, it was an anthology series which featured a “new wave” of British cartooning, featuring a “gaggle”(ahem!) of up-and-coming artists.

Included in the bunch are editor Phil Elliott, Ed Hillyer, and Harrier perennial Paul Grist, of Second City fame. The Australian Eddie Campbell, best known for his work on the Deadface and Bacchus titles, also contributed several pieces. At its best, the work featured in !Gag! was fresh, original, and thought-provoking. But even at its worst, it manages to avoid the clichéd misery and self-absorption that make so many other indie anthologies a chore to read.
