Showcase Presents: Haunted Tank
(DC, 2006)
™ and © DC Comics, Inc.
The Haunted Tank returns and, as is the case with DC’s Jonah Hex edition, this Showcase edition reminds me why it was such a popular feature in G.I. Combat.
With the Haunted Tank, Robert Kanigher created such an interesting concept it had to succeed. A young man named after Civil War General J.E.B. Stuart grows into adulthood and enlists, along with his friends. They are assigned to the same tank, an M3 Stuart. What Jeb Stuart knows is that the ghost of the legendary leader travels with them — and saves them from death many times.
Having never read the origin, I loved it. And the next 32 stories from the prolific Kanigher are excellent in every way. These hail from G.I. Combat #87-119 and a rare appearance in The Brave and the Bold #52, plus a Sgt. Rock-Haunted Tank teaming from Our Army at War. Stories like “The Tank and the Turtle,” “Blind Man’s Radar,” “Tanks with Wings,” and “The Ghost of the Haunted Tank” are terrific. War brings out the hero in many ways.
How could DC have improved the volume? Color covers. The airbrush masterpieces by Heath would be better in color.
