The Black Diamond
(AiT/Planet Lar, 2007)
™ and © 2007 Larry Young and Jon Proctor
Larry Young and Jon Proctor envision the future of America where a huge, eight-lane freeway is constructed from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. Elevated hundreds of feet above the ground and without a speed limit, it is one of the fastest ways to get across the country (because apparently air travel is obsolete). But it quickly becomes a no-man's land; ruthless gangs take over stretches of the freeway, and law enforcement is powerless to protect normal citizens. Meanwhile, the rest of America becomes a safe, idyllic world, and Don McLaughlin is just a normal orthodontist there. That is, until the federal government decides to step in and finally clean up the Black Diamond for good and Don's wife is kidnapped by a mob to keep the army at bay. Don has to get to from California to the east coast as quickly as possible to try to save his wife himself, and the only option he sees is using a forty-year old car and the dangerous Black Diamond.
