Scrap Freeman doesn’t really know what to do with his life, outside of drag-racing along Thunder Road, and he feels stifled by his small-town existence. Sounds like something out of a Bruce Springsteen song, eh? Since his parents died, he has been living with his Uncle Max, a junkyard owner who is concerned about his nephew’s lack of direction, but Scrap just can’t seem to communicate with his uncle. He’s sure Uncle Max wouldn’t understand his feelings. Of course, Scrap’s life suddenly becomes interesting when 21, a giant robot from the future, shows up, looking for a Dr. Kline. Scrap pretends to be Kline and, along with 21, gets sucked through an energy gateway to the robot’s time. There, Scrap grows up a bit and finds some direction…in a brave, new world. Springsteen meets Aldous Huxley? Not really, but it’s an interesting read.
