At the beginning of this 8-issue series, Xena the Warrior Princess is dead. It might be a challenge to get eight issues of story based on that scenario so her best friend and companion Gabrielle, consumed with grief, undertakes a quest to find the old gods. Traveling to what appears to be the ancient Mayan civilization, Gabrielle eventually confronts a tentacled creature, C’thulon, that seems to be inspired by an H.P. Lovecraft tale. Despite C’thulon’s warning about being careful what you wish for, Gabrielle wishes, “To have her back, and to have everything back–back to the way it was.” Additionally, C’thulon warns that Gabrielle would be in his debt and he would someday call it in, but Gabrielle will not be dissuaded. It should be no surprise that things do not work out exactly as Gabrielle wanted and therein lies eight issues of plot. This series is set after the finale on Xena’s television series but before Dynamite Entertainment’s series, Contest of the Pantheons. — George Haberberger
