Balloon Vendor Comix
(Rip Off, 1971)
and © 1971 Overland Vegetable Stagecoach
Awash in psychedelic art, Balloon Vendor Comix is typical of the underground titles that appeared in the late 60s and early 70s. Although low on the sexual content that often saturated these books, Balloon Vendor Comix is nevertheless high on hallucinogenic imagery. The first story, The Time Machine, epitomizes the drug-laced, irreverent style of underground comix, featuring a scientist who visits different periods in history until he reaches the birth of the universe, a chaotic landscape of floating pigs, singing vegetables, and flowers blooming out of nothingness.
