Just when you thought there wasnít an original premise left in comics anymore, along comes The Birthday Boy with one of the weirdest ideas to ever see print. Little Hugo, a precocious nine-year-old terror, innocently blows out the candles on his cake and wishes every day was his birthday. Unfortunately, his wish is granted, setting off a chain of events that forces him to save the Earth from invasion by the moon. Jason Lethcoe illustrates his bizarre fable in a harsh black-and-white style that blends Bill Waterson (Calvin and Hobbes) with Harvey Kurtzman (Mad) for some truly disturbing visual effects. Hard to say who the intended audience for this little gem might beómaybe it was just a story begging to be told.
