Tipper GORE’s Comics and Stories
(Revolutionary, 1989-1990)
™ and © 1989 Revolutionary Comics
In the late 1980s, Tipper Gore, wife of then-obscure Senator Al Gore, launched a crusade against naughty lyrics in popular music which ultimately led to the much-ignored “Parents Advisory” labels on many rap and heavy metal albums. Revolutionary Comics, publishers of Rock ‘N Roll Comics, offered up TG’s Comics and Stories as a one-finger salute to Tipper and censorship in general. Unfortunately, the gesture of rebellion doesn’t extend far beyond the title. Tipper Gore’s C&S features a variety of standard-issue “alternative” tales of grim and grue rendered in semi-professional style in sketchy black and white. The best work shows an affection (and affectation) for Tales From the Crypt-style horror, itself the victim of Tipper’s ideological ancestors in the 1950s. Cool color covers by luminaries like Robert Williams add some aesthetic appeal.
