Scott Lobdell, standup comic turned comics writer, has always injected a healthy dose of humor in just about any comic series he’s written. This time, Lobdell may have overdosed. He seems to be going for The Tick-scale parody comic book rather than any serious—or even semi-serious—work.

Recent Marvel titles have been criticized for their pacing, and this is no different: By the end of the issue, Walter Langowski has unsuccessfully recruited his team and has had a wacky dream sequence. Compare that to John Byrne’s Alpha Flight #1, when Alpha Flight disbanded, reformed, accepted new members, and faced down and defeated a menace, all in one issue!

Clayton Henry has an overly muscled but cartoony style. Henry has a good handle on expressions, action, and reaction, essential elements in any humor title.
Even a humor book can’t be all funny all the time, because, with so many gags, the humor’s going to miss more than hit. Alpha Flight will have to find some kind of drama or driving element within the humor in future issues.
