OK, here's a dilemma for you:

What are the plans for databasing the 80 different variants of IDW's Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #1?

Well, the good new is, you know what all 52 of the variants are, so entering them won't be too hard - Mississippi variant, Ohio variant, Louisiana variant, etc.

WTFreak?
comicsatemybrain Posted - 11/05/2012 : 10:12:01
The new meaning to the term "The New 52"!

Supposedly these 52 variants aren't limited, all shop owners can purchase any number of each of them. (This would be in addition to the regular, non-variant cover version.)

That sound you hear is Mark's head exploding... again.

Well, considering that we've had this kind of variant stunt for the last (roughly) year and a half (based on when we started this thread), the publishers must feel that it works on some level or other. Until that is no longer the case, I think we'll continue to see it.

Keep in mind that Mars Attacks from IDW will have 50+ variants too it. So whatever you do with Godzilla repeat it with MA.

Well, it looks like at least one person out there went to the effort of collecting all of the ASM #666 variants...

They should be treated like the "blank" variants Marvel has been doing lately when someone gets a sketch on them. It's not really an entirely NEW variant, just a duplicate.
alandec Posted - 08/07/2011 : 05:14:06
The problem is that now I am going to have to scroll past how many variants of #666 to get to the next issue. I still feel that any variant other than "mass market" variants should be individual user specific with a comment in the notes section as to which cover it is, just like the FF#1 variant. Would make this sooooo much easier.

I believe that particular kind of variant is different because the specific store name is detailed out on the inside cover rather than the main front cover.

Pete's call on this is to treat it like we did the Godzilla store variants. Creating a new title just for this is out of the question. I know, its not pretty but we already established how to treat this with Godzilla.

Has anyone created the ASM store variants in their database with all the stores? Please send in a correction through the software if so.
immortalthor Posted - 07/29/2011 : 12:05:15
My suggestion? Just make the one issue in CB, then let people ENTER their own variants. This whole things is just dumb as hell. When did I time travel back to the 90's?
comicsatemybrain Posted - 07/29/2011 : 10:52:17
IMO, this is an idea worth considering for those books with a whole crapton of variants.

Another way to look at it: When visiting AA's listing for Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, do you really want to scroll through most of a page to get to issue #2?

Or how about scrolling through a page and a half to go from Amazing Spider-man #665 to #667?
GlennSimpson Posted - 07/29/2011 : 09:20:52
Now might be a good time to implement that "hyperlink from one book to another" sort of feature so that you could put 1 #666 in the regular title and then create a new "Title" to hold all of the variants, like the Marvel 100 Project thingy.
comicsatemybrain Posted - 07/29/2011 : 07:49:43
Just in case there is some part of your brain that hasn't finished exploding yet...

It is likely that there will be fewer of these than the Amazing Spider-Man #666 store variants, but even so...
alandec Posted - 07/28/2011 : 19:16:00
"Crap" is the nice way to put it.

Here is the full list of the store-specific variants for Amazing Spider-Man #666. This should permit a full set of entries to be put into the database (not counting scans... not all of the covers are shown at the link).

Crap.

Quick update... updater is being tested for bugs as well as stability. Hopefully we can roll it out in a few days. I'll post an update when it goes live.
mcastaneda Posted - 04/06/2011 : 10:11:36
Pete assures me right now its a cosmetic issue with the 26 and higher printing numbers in the detail view.

We will be rolling out a new program updater to address the problem in the next few days. I'd hold off on doing any kind of inventory with those particular issues of the Godzilla store variants.
Stealth_DBA Posted - 04/05/2011 : 16:57:19
I just checked and when I double click on the issue to edit it, the Printing box has cboPrinting. If I try to save with this there, I ran into the same problem you describe. I had to delete. It corrupted the database so I had to delete it and rename a backup.

When you edit, make your you change the Printing to a number (the drop down box only goes up to 25 and you can't scroll, so just type in the number).
mjacobson Posted - 04/05/2011 : 16:33:30
The variant I'm working with is DCBS (1/E-28). I named the scan 1-E-28.jpg. At first it didn't show up, then I renamed it the same thing and started to add info in the modify issue window. When I clicked "save", I got a "can't save this" message and CB saved my info as issue 1/E (issue 1/E-28 is missing in the lineup).

**Fixed the problem***

By the way, is "Godzilla: Monster World" another new title, or is it the old title for "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters"? If that's the old working title, we need to delete it.

Stealth_DBA Posted - 04/05/2011 : 16:13:02
mjacobson, If you typed it in you post exactly like you named the jpg, the problem is the space between the second dash and the last 1. There should be no space. It should be:

1-E-1.jpg

The way to name a jpg is to go by the following:

Type all Letters, Numbers, Spaces and Dashes exactly as shown in the Issue #. Replace all other items with a dash.

So 1/E-1 becomes 1-E-1.jpg (only replacing the / with a - ).

PS If you did NOT have a space, you may have to leave the Title and come back for CB to 'refresh' the display. You shouldn't have to do this but I just did.
mjacobson Posted - 04/05/2011 : 16:05:46
When scanning these variants, what is the name for the jpg file?Godzilla 1/E-1, for example, is 1-E_1.jpg. I'm not sure what that underscore should be, as I named it 1-E-1.jpg and it doesn't show up.
