I've been out of comics for a few years. I have started to pick up some titles again. Well, then some has turned into more and now a lot. I see there are several subscription services online. I was wondering if anyone on here uses any of those or if you pretty much stick to the local shops? Or subscriptions directly from Marvel/DC? My biggest drive in going this direction would be saving some $$$. Thank you.

Just to give a "Thumbs Up" to DCBS. I had two books on my pull list that they had already told me that due to a problem would not automatically to my monthly orders.

So I emailed them, and they told me if I wanted they could ship them out with my next shipment. When I told them I am willing to do that, and pay extra if they needed money to ship them out. This was on Wednesday, and while working at my LCS I saw an alternate cover for Justice Society #75 that I fell in love with so I asked them to add it as well.
They told me they would add it to the others.

I just want to let others who might be on the fence about DCBS, how they handled what really was my mistake.

hi,
i am chris and i am a big fan of this site. i like this type information and i have ever never seen such type of data at other pklaces like it. i would like to especially appreciate you all peopl on this attempt.

Guess that means I'll likely be ordering from DCBS this month. Oh well, I got one month cheaper and bags/boards on the comics... I just found a new source for bags/boards that comes out to less than $0.09/comic (I do have to drive 2 1/2 hours, but I can figure excuses to visit that area when I use up 1000). A different subscription place would have to be about $4.50 less a month per 50 comics to be equal to HC. If their prices have gone up that much, won't be hard. DCBS will just get more customers.
bigdave Posted - 06/06/2010 : 21:38:16
I think I'm going to give DCBS a shot given the positive comments from everyone. I was actually okay with the HC's website navigation, although it took a little getting used to.

A little update on the HC pricing situation. They indeed reduced their average discount on popular titles from 40% to 25%. Their previous email announcement stated this would apply to, quote-unquote, "many" comics, but from what I've seen so far it's been applied to *ALL* of their popular titles. Pretty much across the board. Not a very nice way to keep their customers happy, announcing one thing but doing another. Particularly since they emphasize customer service is #1 to them. Perhaps they're coming into tough times, so I won't keep pouncing on them. But going from 40 to 25 percent is a significant price change to warrant moving onto another service.

Bobb Posted - 05/26/2010 : 04:34:29
While DCBS may be a bit daunting at first, it does get easier if you use the Previews as a guide.
I just did a quick look at my savings in almost a year, and i have saved around $900.00 since I started using them. i use them for collected editions, some statues (I got the Green Lantern Blackest Night Ring display for $40.79), magazines, and alternate covers.
riothamus Posted - 05/25/2010 : 10:02:00
Yeah, since this is the first time in several years that I've even checked other sources, I'm going to compare the three for the next few months. I notice that the DCBS and Heroes Corner websites are harder to use and navigate through. Though this might be because I'm so used to G-mart's interface which are VERY simple text pages but it's really quick to load and change quantities. However, saving ~$6 a month plus bags/boards is worth a little extra time on my part. I figures its at least the time it would take me to bag and board the comics anyway. I usually only get 40-50 comics a month, usually ~$100-$125 so we'll see who give what discount next time.

Excelsior!

I been with DCBS for the last 2 years and I figured up what I spent on my next order against Heroes Corner and I would have saved almost 7 dollars. It doesn't sound like much but after a while it will had up.
riothamus Posted - 05/24/2010 : 19:06:30
Well, that's interesting because tonight I compared G-mart (past 8 years), DCBS, and Heroes Corner. Base price not including shipping I saved $12 at both DCBS and Heroes Corner over G-mart. Adding shipping I still saved and Heroes Corner beat out DCBS by about $.30 before shipping and they have the free bags/boards so I went with them this time. Looked like my discounts were in the normal 30-40%. We shall see next month. Might go with DCBS since I'd still be saving ~$6 over G-mart. I hate to do it since I've been really happy at G-Mart, but $6/month will add up, especially if I can get bags/boards.

Excelsior!

Hi. I've been a happy subscriber to Heroes Corner and have been extremely pleased with their overall service (i.e. customer service response no more than 1 day, super condition of comics, tracking of my ordered and pending comics, well boxed & shipped, free bags/boards). And even better, their pricing rivaled DCBS (generally 40% off the popular titles).

However... tonight they sent an email advising for the upcoming June order they're lowering the typical discount from 40% to 25% for "many" comics in order to "improve customer service quality" with this increase in revenue. This is really a bummer for me. I don't know if by "many comics" it'll wind up being "most comics" that I order. And I have no idea what they mean by wanting to improve customer service... they were already fabulous IMO. My gut feels this is just a ploy to increase prices rather than improving customer service. I wonder if the margins and the economy are killing them. With a 25% discount plus shipping costs I may be better off sticking to a local comic store. As I mentioned before... I'm really bummed, and will have to think what route I want to go. Price is a big factor for me. But I truly vouch for their service.

I get free shipping over $85 at G-mart, which I get pretty much every month. I've never had a damaged book come in and if I miss something in June and notice issue #2 in July, they'll add the missing issue to my list at the pre-order price.

It looks like dcbs will be ~$0.20 cheaper per book plus they do steep 50-75% discounts on certain issues each month. Looks like I'd save around $10 a month factoring in the $5.95 shipping. Heroes corner also does some special pricing, but they will bag and board each comic for free.

Anybody have experience with Heroes corner?

If you subscribe to DCBS always order your HCs and TPBs through DCBS (if it's not listed on the site just email them) it will be CHEAPER. They always give me the 35-40+% on TPBs and HCs and it always beats the price listed at Instocktrades.com ....sometimes it's just a little but still.

Bobb Posted - 04/19/2010 : 11:59:15
In my experience, and admittedly I only used them once in the past. It took 4 days to get the shipment ready, and I got it in 8 days.

I figured I would add my two cents:

I went with www.dcbservice.com and am paying $90 (I chose the 2 shipments per month) with no sales tax. I chose them based upon the recent posts in this topic.

I also ordered some trade paperbacks from instocktrades.com but the order is still pending. Does anyone know how quick they are to package up an in stock order?

Thanks for the thread!

There are both pretty similar.

Been using DCBS for a while now, I just love it!

I have a question, I looked at your web page, and at the bottom of the page it read that you were (Formerly iComic.ca). When I do a search on that name I find many broken links. Did you buy the old company or did you change your name. Are you still a Canadian based company? I have a few friends who live up north and would love to support a "Home Grown" company.

Hi Bobb, yes, the site was known as icomic.ca right up until a few weeks ago but has now been renamed http://expertcomics.com. I'll spare everyone in the forum the 'marketing' pitches but there's a new team running the site and we're in the process of re-branding, relaunching and working on providing a great user experience. We're still based in Canada and offer both CDN and US pricing/shipping on the site. Yeah, your friends up here would probably save on shipping, freeing up some money for more titles, heh heh... If you want to find out more, please don't hesitate to contact us. Cheers! info@expertcomics.com

For those who asked, DCBS has now updated their site to reflect the September catalog (on average, the site is updated around the 6th or 7th of the month).

Hey everyone, although the thread is old the information is still very valuable. I just wanted to add another option since it's been a while and things online change quite rapidly. Yes, it's a shameless plug and I hope I don't incur everyone's anger for it but we recently launched http://www.expertcomics.com as an online comic shop and subscription service. Titles are listed at 15-70% off and subscription members get an even steeper discount off cover price. As collectors ourselves, we make sure to put a lot of care into our customer service and bag, board and package the comic books and items properly so that they're received in the best condition. Thanks in advance for taking a look!

When purchasing your monthly books, you can also get trades at the same time from in stock trades. My view, same company different advertising Banners.
stone384 Posted - 11/06/2008 : 16:59:19
Is the In Stock Trades site different than the regular DCBS site? With current issues of the verge of pricing me out of buying them I am looking to do more trades. I am interested in DCBS since I have been a loyal floppies buyer from them and would like to stay at the company.

I thought it would be a good idea to give an update on my situation since I started this thread.

I did decide to go with DCBS and last week received my first shipment. All was as expected and at this point I have no complaints.

I did e-mail about changing some info on the credit card I was using and received a same day reply. (if you're a pessimist you could say that is because it's to thier benefit to charge a card that will actually work)

I have also placed an order from thier In Stock Trades website and that was a good experience as well. Good prices, free shipping over $50, fast shipment and packed well.

So, long story short I'm happy and for now will continue to use their services.

At the risk of illicitng the wrath of my fellow Atomic Avenue / Comicbase forum members, I would like to humbly suggest you all check out the subscription service my company offers at http://www.paragoncomics.com/.

We are a family run, smaller business with both a brick and mortar and on-line store (yes, we also sell on Atomic Avenue and the dreaded E-bay). While we provide everything you would EXPECT from a serious on-line vendor (great value, secure packaging, prompt service and accurate, user friendly ordering) we differ from many on-line stores in that:
  • We individually bag and board each comic at no additional charge
  • our service is fully automated - your monthly orders are automatically placed for you based on your pull list
  • you are billed only for the books you recieve, when they arrive in our store - so you are not paying in advance for product that may not arrive, or arrives late, or damaged, etc..

Like other on-line services we offer free shipping on orders over $50.00 USD (this may have to change soon due to postal rate increases and the elimination of BPM shipping).

Yes, we are are smaller than some and younger than others, but everyone starts somewhere. I believe Marvel Comics use to say "we're number two, but we try harder" or something to that effect. I'm not sure what number we are but we absolutely try harder.

Thanks for listening.

I used tfaw.com for a good while and have since moved to heavyinc.com which is a newer company. Their interface is very nice (probably the nicest I've seen) and they have free shipping. Shipping was pretty much the only reason I left tfaw.com as their subscription system is top-notch but their shipping prices are just way too high.

I have been reading comics for about 30 years and begining in 1989 I started using Westfield Comics based out of Wisconsin. Being in the military it was the only way to get what I wanted each month. Well, almost 20 years later and i still use them. They are online, easy to use and very friendly. I drop about $100 a month and shipping is about $8 via fedex or ups. give them a try i think you would like them.

I use DCBS as well and have for the most part been happy. Good customer service, prices, discounts etc.... The site is a bit clunky at times, but not that big a deal. The only thing they really could do to improve things is let us know when the next month is available for ordering. A mass email or a counter on the main page would accomplish this. There have been a few times where I nearly forgot. Luckily it seems that the shipped books email notice usually comes about a week before the next month is available for order. So I use the email as a kind of reminder to check the site. Otherwise no complaints.

Unfortunately when I checked www.mmcomics.com out, the price they wanted for the "Herbie Archives" was only $5.00 less than cover price. While at http://www.dcbservice.com/index.aspx I got at 35% off, or $32.47.
They may be better on some books, but the other service seems to be better on the big price items. That is why I always shop around to numerous sources and choose the cheapest with best reputation.

I also noticed that their shipping costs were a bit high compared to other services. Though as a disclaimer I should mention when I order from http://www.mycomicshop.com/ I get the best shipping deal around, no charge at all! (Well O.K. I live near about 4 stores within15 miles and pick my books up there. And since they are near other errands I run it is no extra gas.)

That or wait till they collections show up on Amazon Marketplace or ebay.
