OK..so I finally bought a legal sized filing cabinet to store some of my collection and possibly free me from future box purchases. They ARE nice but as is they are not very comicbook friendly as the books WILL flop all over the place unless one devises some sort of divider for the center. What follows are pics showing what I came up with to solve this most annoying issue.
I put my new HON brand cabinet between two of my plastic shelf units that hold my short boxes:

Here are the supplies/tools needed to build the row dividers:

Whiteboard is "foam project board". I got mine from Office Depot ($9.99 for a 2 pack).
This shows the shape I cut for the divider board:

I made it a little over 25 inches long. (Cabinet is standard 26& 1/2 inch deep unit) |

I completely removed the metal drawer depth adjustment things from all 4 drawers as I want all the space for comics. I fit the assembled foamboard divider piece into the drawer very tightly so no mounting tape on the metal itself is needed:

The back panel piece is attached to row divider with the shipping tape. I cut a "slot" into the back piece (which is 15 inches wide and 10 inches tall by the way). The divider is then jammed into this slot. It protrudes out the back about a quarter of an inch. I then sandwiched a couple of small pieces of the same material on either side of the protrusion and taped it up so it would be flat/flush.

Because the divider length is so tight I had to cut a triangle out of the front to get the thing started. I then forced it into the drawer:
These show how that all comes together:

The front panel is actually two pieces jammed on each side of the divider board. Each piece is 7.5 inches wide and 10 inches tall. The foamboard compresses nicely and still stays fairly firm when jammed in place like this.

This shows the two front panel pieces jammed down about 85% of the way:

And here it is all the way down:

ALL my Wolverine comics in one drawer:

ComicBase reports this drawer as having 372 issues in it and the drawer still has some room. This is nearly every mini, special, one-shot, annual and all of the first series and the current series (both Origin and Wolverine).

If anyone wants to see much larger versions of these pics I had Acdsee whip a quick album here:

Nice work, Larry and I am glad you tried this out. What model HON did you buy? 310, 322, 380? Also, after loading this up, what do you think? |

I got a #370.
I have two more drawers to fill with comics but I'm thinking this has turned out to be a Good Thing.
I do NOT recommended even trying this with thout some form of divider though if one values one's sanity!

I think I will have a better idea of if it was worth the 200 bucks after I've used it more as far as everyday filing/browsing.

Great pics Larry.
Good idea using foam baord. It looks really nice and neat. I used old long boxes as I needed to do something with the few I had laying around. I still would place some back boards or other thin cardboard on the bottom. Also I prefer a middle divider in the drawer as well. Of course those are personal options that each collector has to choose if they want or not. |

Thanks Mark & Rocket.
Well the bottoms of my drawers are really smooth and flat...no burs or anything so I just didn't see the need to line it with something. I've already had to trim some off the bottom of ALL my plastic title-divider boards as they HIT when I closed the drawer. So if I line the bottom with something that will add to this problem. But yeah to each his own.

This is really interesting. I have purchased dividers from three different companies now and one of the companies products didn't interfere with the drawer. If i can ever figure out which one it was, I will post!! |

Nice photos and some good ideas there.
I actually picked up three used legal size black file cabinets (in great condition) for about $45 each from Craigslist. What was interesting was that they had a black metal divider/backstop which can be used as a divider and movable wall within the drawer. (They slot into the holes at each side of the drawer.)
I originally used some board to fill that narrow middle channel to make it flush with the metal surface and then put the dividers in.
(I also own about 100 Drawerboxes, but I wanted these file cabinets for some of my permanent collection.)
I also found that the thicker plastic title dividers I like won't fit without trimming. As they look great in my Drawerboxes, I'll probably have to trim them (and keep them separate) or find another title divider vendor just for the file cabinets.

The dividers I picked up from BCW were the ones I was thinking of. I need to order some more so I will update shortly the dimensions of these but would hope they are reflected on the web site as well. |

For those of you with file cabinets:
Michael's Craft Store has foam board on sale for $0.87 per 20x30 inch sheet. This is reduced from the normal $2.19. I'm assuming each store will have it on sale and it was not limited to the Atlanta stores.
I figured this would be good news for anyone who wants to make dividers.

Sure...I forgot about this thread & moved somethings around on my site. Let me adjust the posts. For some reason the system won't let me edit the opening post though. I'll have to bug Shiaw-Ling for that.
