A thematic hybrid of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files, Occult Crimes Taskforce represents another addition to the occult crime genre. It turns out the Indians weren’t fools when they sold Manhattan for a bagful of beads and sea shells: the island happens to be a nexus of mystical, evil energy. And wouldn’t you know it, the NYPD has a secret division of law enforcement to deal with magic, monsters and witches.
Tony Shasteen’s spare, atmospheric illustration calls to mind the work Lauren McCubbin with its reliance on compelling realism and moody facial expression. Co-written by indie film actress Rosario Dawson.
