Dagwood Bumstead was the real star of the Blondie, Chic Young’s incredibly popular and long-running comic strip. Once the ne’er-do-well son of a millionaire, Dagwood’s father disinherited him when he insisted on marrying the flighty Blondie Boopadoop. Suddenly, the rich layabout had become a working class layabout—and the strip began to refocus as a family comedy. Blondie went from party girl to tolerant wife, and in Dagwood was the bumbling star who spent his days being browbeaten by his tyrannical boss, and in his off-time doing his absolute best to catch up on his sleep. Dagwood, always attuned to the simple pleasures in life, is also famous for creating the Dagwood sandwich, a towering mountain of luncheon meat that is a defining joy of Dagwood’s life.
