I have a few questions with regards to the new Atlas release, and its new setup:

1) If we are currently version 12 users, will we still be able to get a CD version of Atlas or other major builds when we renew our subscriptions? I personally sometimes have trouble upgrading from version to version (like 12.3 to 12.4) via the web, but have always been successful if installing by scratch from a CD. I would have no problem paying for the extra shipping so long as I can still receive a CD version on major upgrades.

2) Will this new setup solve the year based price fields updating at the turn of the calander year? In other words, in January if a user checks for updates & updates to the newest ComicBase version, will the price fields be automatically adjusted? If not, a reset years button, but not other preferences would be helpful. This leads to my last question...

3) In the past, to solve issue #2 above between version releases, we had to reset our preferences (thus losing any saved preference info like custom fields, etc.). Will this be resolved in the final released Atlas. It's not a major problem (but it is a pain), but I'm wondering if the new renewal based upgrade set up will eliminate this issue.

The new slated release sounds very cool, with substantial changes/improvements such as the new upgrade/renewal setup.

Pete, I tried the command you had said to "push" the comic book info into a sales receipt but that does not work, again I think It would be so much easier to just right click over the book that was sold and have a "sell" command which pushes the book info into the sales receipt.

Atlas arriving for early summer, does that mean it might ship by the Comic Con?

Yes--although if you're having trouble with your scanner, this should point you to a solution (unless it's actually physically damaged):

I have a scanner I purchased along with 11 and it does not work properly so bleeping in is out, so your saying by selecting choose from the right click menu it should import the issue selected into the sales receipt?
pbickford Posted - 06/10/2008 : 20:37:17
The Atlas release is pretty much locked down as far as features go for the initial release. That said, it's an interesting (if, admittedly--slightly offbeat) take on the sell feature, however. Wouldn't bleeping in the codes (or using the Choose button) be more straightforward than going out of the dialog entirely in order to add things to it?
ComicCrusaders Posted - 06/10/2008 : 16:19:42
In reference to the Atlas release is it possible to add another right click feature, meaning I like to use the sell comics command to make sales receipts, I think it would be amazing if we could just right click over the book that is sold and click on sell so that it automatically pushes into the sales receipt. Is this possible? Right now I have to copy and paste upc codes and its time consuming.

hmm maybe an excuse to upgrade soon
pbickford Posted - 06/08/2008 : 00:00:36
If you're an Atlas Archive edition user, you can just select those issues and use the Download Cover command to grab them anytime.

Sorry, I was thinking more of being able to grab single art files, only as needed, so if I needed only Iron Man 6, 8, and 10, I'd only pull like 3 mb
pbickford Posted - 06/07/2008 : 07:33:44
Actually, the programming is relatively simple, but with an art base of 220,000+ and counting, the sheer bulk of the network traffic makes it untenable. (Think: multi-day file transfers with an art base in excess of 25 GB--and then multiply that by thousands of users). It's a big reason why when you order the Archive version you get the disks as well.

Maybe there can be a preference to check for missing artwork automatically, like other programs have, on a scheduled basis?

As a programmer I know this might add complexity, but it might be appreciated.

Even if it isn’t in the update, you can still download missing covers at any time by right-clicking on the issue and choosing “Download Cover”.

Woody, I believe the way it works is ONLY Issues under "New Issues" in the Download Log will have available cover scans sent.
Woody Posted - 05/19/2008 : 04:25:55
The weekly cover downlaod includes the weeks new comic covers. Does it also include newly acquired cover scans (acquired by the comicbase team) from older comics that previously did not have cover scans.

I'm going to try to have it on the servers by Sunday night. (We leave for Erlangen early next week, so I'll try to push the ball forward a bit before I need to be out of action for the better part of two weeks).

When will d5 be available?
MedicAR Posted - 05/15/2008 : 16:50:48
Good enough for me! Thanks!
pbickford Posted - 05/15/2008 : 16:43:02
We've been working on an experiment to see if we can get true 32-bit icons worked into that part of the program (there are some surprising technical challenges to it) -- the icon swapping on the Search icon in d4 was an artifact of an (unsuccessful) technology test. Expect it to revert to normal in d5.

Is anyone having trouble with the search icon (magnifying glass)? It looks fine at start up, but one I use it, it changes with the handle pointing to the lower right and a dark back ground with some sort of a part of a frame.

The funciton is fine, the icon is wacky.
Woody Posted - 05/15/2008 : 08:52:33
Blu-ray it is for me then :)
pbickford Posted - 05/15/2008 : 08:35:51
Yes (and the Blu-Ray version comes with quarterly updates on disk as well).

-Pete
Bobb Posted - 05/15/2008 : 07:46:53
If you upgrade to the Blue-Ray version under this plan do you still get the quarterly updated picture discs.
I am this <-> to getting a Blue-Ray drive now that they are around the $200 price.
(Can anyone suggest one drive over another?)

Woody. I don't think you have to 'go for the disks option'. According to this post from Peter:
quote:
The exception to this is the Archive Editions, which involve an immediate extension to your subscription, but we also mail you new disks due to the huge amount of data involved. (Yes, even though you can download things now, we'd really rather that everyone wasn't trying to download all 20+ GB of content with their Archive Edition when they can install it from the disks).

If are are an Archive Edition owner, disks will be sent along with the subscription.
Woody Posted - 05/15/2008 : 03:30:19
Another question, will there be a blu ray version?
Woody Posted - 05/15/2008 : 00:54:17
I prefer the covers without watermarks and so will be going for the disks option.
I will have to accept the new downloaded covers for that year will have watermarks.
pbickford Posted - 05/14/2008 : 16:05:43
Yes, the downloaded pictures do have (very small, and very transparent) watermarks. At this point, we're not planning on (visibly) watermarking the disk pictures.

Pete, Earlier in this post, a question was asked " Will all downloads have watermarks? ". So will they? Rob

If it's taking minutes (heck, more that a few seconds) to launch ComicBase, something's either wrong, or you're using a very slow machine. The obvious first step is to do a File -> File Tools -> Compact & Verify on your database. I'd also suggest installing pictures (or having the disks available) to prevent startup time lost searching, as well as making sure that your machine isn't set to be always checking for internet services (e.g. "Check for updates") which may not be connected at startup or in a remote location.

hlantern. If you are asking about the Pro Edition, it comes on CD. It is the Archive Edition that uses DVDs due to the many cover scans.

I just checked the Picture disks of my Archive DVDs. One contains 7.38GBs and another contains 7.61GBs
